Mind that turning on the outputs is all this enabler does. So there you have it, surround sound on your Mac for the price of a cheap USB audio card on eBay - with some caveats however. Combined with some sample code from the XCode Developer kit, I managed to create a simple program that sends the crucial packets, enabling both the analog outputs and the S/PDIF. Therefore I started gathering information: I used a USB sniffer to look at the packets sent to the device in Windows with and without the driver installed, and I found some useful clues in the Linux ALSA driver source code (more specifically the usbaudio.c file) and mailinglist. Apparently the device boots with its outputs disabled, and the only thing the ‘driver’ does is send some specific configuration requests to enable both the analog outputs and the optical S/PDIF. The same symptoms occur in Windows until the C-Media driver is installed. At first sight it does work: the sound card can be selected in the audio control panel and the 6 or 8 channels can be assigned using Audio MIDI setup. The CM6206 chip is a fully compliant USB audio device that should work as-is on any modern operating system without requiring drivers. The Sweex SC016 is also based on the CM6206, as is the Diamond XS71U. Some major brands also use this chip, for instance Zalman uses it in their ZM-RS6F USB headphones.
#PLEX FOR MAC 10.7 5 SERIAL NUMBER#
The one I bought had a serial number “29776659” but there are other products that use this IC. It is a 5.1 device but the IC supports up to 7.1 audio. One of the common cheap devices sold on eBay that uses this IC can be seen in the photo at the right. This is a small program that activates the analog and S/PDIF outputs on USB devices that are based on the C-Media CM6206 multi-channel sound chip (sometimes also referred to as CMI6206). If the installer still works on your machine but you get an error “e00002c5,” then this may be of help. Even better would be if you would share it as a GitHub project or the like and notify me so I can link to it from here. If you succeed, it would be nice if you could send me either that binary or a link to where it can be downloaded, so other people can also use it. Your best option if you have a minimum of experience with XCode, is to download the source code (ZIP archive) and try to build a 64-bit binary. Do not expect any help if you mail me for support. Because I no longer use this kind of sound card and have little time to work on this, I have zero motivation fo fix this. Moreover, the program is not 64-bit, so it still won't run even if you would be able to bypass the installer. First of all, the installer no longer works because of stricter security.

This is broken in Mac OS X 10.15 ‘Catalina’.
